Marcus Rashford will play against Young Boys, but Jose Mourinho refused to confirm if the striker would start in Manchester United’s Champions League opener on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old is being tipped to start his first game since the opening day of the season, with United expected to cruise by the European minnows.
Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial too travelled with the squad to Switzerland, but Rashford’s domestic suspension is likely to assure the centre-forward of a spot against Young Boys.
With a selection debate currently swirling about Rashford, Mourinho wants the focus on Wednesday night to be about those who do play and not about those who are sitting on the bench.
‘He is selected for the game. I want to remind you in advance that we can only start with eleven,’ Mourinho said.
‘When tomorrow you see the team, try to speak about the ones that are playing not the ones who aren’t.
‘We have Lukaku, Rashford, Mata, Alexis, Martial – they can’t all play together. We have to be happy with the ones playing and not critical about the ones that aren’t.’
United have a difficult group to navigate through with Juventus and Valencia the other two teams in Group H.
Juventus are the favourites to top the group, but United will be aiming to get off to an assured start against Young Boys.
Mourinho will also be keen to continue a good run of form for United after collecting successive victories in the Premier League.
‘I think we are improving,’Mourinho said. ‘We have found a balance in the team, especially with the competitive attitude.
‘We are creating plenty of chances, we are changing how we attack opponents and protect ourselves in situations.
‘Two difficult matches, both away, and we have six points. I am happy but I was happy after Tottenham – not with the result but with what I saw.
‘We felt as a team that match was the beginning of our improvements.’
