A wrestler has been rushed to hospital for emergency brain surgery to
remove a blood clot from his brain after a rival threw a concrete block
at his head.
Cuervo, a Puerto Rican wrestler competing in Mexico, was knocked
unconscious after the vicious attack from rival Angel o Demonio in what
was dubbed a “deathmatch”.
During the extreme match, Cuervo repeatedly struck Demonio with a
steel chair at the event in Mexico City, before Demonio retreated to the
backstage area to return armed with a concrete block.
As Cuervo (The Raven) went in search of another foreign object under
the ring apron, Demonio (Angel or Demon) viciously launched the brick at
him from behind and above.
Cuervo, 44, real name Jaime Correa, was blindsided by the assault and
the heavy block knocked him unconscious to which a doctor immediately
called off the “deathmatch”.
According to an update on Cuervo’s Facebook page, surgery was
required to remove the clot and hours later it was said to be a success
by his manager.
But, Demonio’s horrific actions have been condemned by the wider
wrestling community including WWE legends Kurt Angle and Bubba Ray
Dudley.
The Hall of Fame star wrote on Twitter: “Give me 10 seconds with that
stupid MFer that threw the brick. Shouldn’t be anywhere near the
business.”
The Boxing and Wrestling Commission of Mexico have now indefinitely
suspended Demonio, 54, real name Héctor González, for the sickening
attack.
But, Angel o Demonio has instead stated that he was aiming for Cuervo’s back but “did not have the accuracy”.
“I apologise to the entire public because first of all I am a professional,” he said.
An investigation has now been opened into why the promoters held an
extreme wrestling match to begin with when such events are banned.
