Plot
City of Glass begins a few days after the conclusion of City of Ashes. Magnus Bane creates a portal to send the Lightwoods, Jace, Clary and Madeleine, a friend of Jocelyn Fray, to Alicante. Jace, desperate to keep Clary out of danger, tries to enlist Simon's help to keep Clary in New York. However, his plans are interrupted when the institute is attacked by Forsaken and Jace is forced to bring Simon to Idris.Clary creates a portal leading to Alicante, but in an attempt to stop her, Luke is dragged with her through the portal to Idris. They land in Lake Lyn, where Clary unwittingly ingests some of the water and begins experiencing fever, delusions, and madness due to an ancient curse placed on the lake. As Clary and Luke make their way to the Alicante, Clary's symptoms worsen and Luke is forced to carry her to the home of his estranged Shadowunter sister, Amatis, were Clary is nursed back to health.
Meanwhile, the others are staying with Aline Penhallow and her visiting cousin, Sebastian Verlac, while Simon is being held captive by the Clave unless he implicates Jace, Clary, and the Lightwoods as Valentine's spies. The next time Jace and Clary meet, they fight after she sees Jace kissing Aline. The next day, Clary goes with Sebastian instead of Jace to Ragnor Fell's house, were they discover Ragnor dead and the Book of the White she needs to help her mom, nowhere to be found. The pair spend the next few hours together until they share an awkward kiss, after which Clary feels uneasy and insists they return home when Sebastian tells her Simon is in jail.
Clary returns to Amatis' house where she and Jace fight again. After they reconcile, they travel through a portal to the Wayland manor and get the Book of the White where they also discover the remains of an experiment Valentine had been running on a half-dead angel and learn the Jace has demon blood. When the two leave, they share a brief moment of passion. Clary stops things from going farther when Jace insinuates that his feelings for her are because of his demon blood. The two return to Alicante and find it in flames. They give Magnus the Book of the White and proceed to break Simon out of jail, where they realize that Sebastian is Valentine's spy. Jace, Clary, Alec, and Simon return to the Hall, only to discover that Sebastian has killed Max (Alec and Isabelle's younger brother). After Max's funeral, Jace sneaks into Clary's bedroom and tells her he loves her and always will. The following morning, Jace leaves her a love letter and sneaks off to find Sebastian.
Clary manages to convince the Clave to fight together with the Downworlders and teaches them a binding rune so they can share their powers, which the dying angel showed her. While the Shadowhunters and Downworlders are forming their alliances with the rune, Alec kisses Magnus in front of the huge crowd, revealing his sexuality to his parents and the Clave. After talking with her mother, Clary discovers that she and Jace received angel’s blood while in the womb and that Jace is actually the son of Stephen Herondale, while Sebastian is Clary's real brother with demon blood.
Meanwhile, Jace finds Sebastian talking to Valentine, who intends to use Lake Lyn to summon Raziel and get a wish that he will use to destroy all the Downworlders and Shadowhunters that are not his allies. After Valentine leaves, Jace battles Sebastian, who informs him of the actual familial bonds that Jocelyn revealed to Clary. Jace defeats Sebastian with a stab through the back, piercing his heart.
Clary portals to Lake Lyn to stop Valentine from summoning Raziel, but Valentine uses a rune to incapacitate her with the intent to use her as a sacrifice. When Jace arrives to rescue her, Valentine kills him and uses his blood to summon Raziel. However, Clary manipulates the summoning runes so that Raziel kills Valentine and grants Clary her one wish to bring Jace back to life. Clary and Jace return to the city where they recuperate and enjoy the following victory celebrations.
